Angrid Thai Canteen

Do not be fooled by the horrendous colour scheme and signage outside! This place is great!


I was very distressed when La Baguette, which used to be at this location, closed down, and had a lot of resentment towards Angrid when it first opened. But a friend assured me the new place was worth going, and now I can't get enough. As I write this review I'm about to leave to take-away their vegetarian Pad Thai for the second time in three days.


There are a fair few Thai alternatives in central Oxford, most notably Chiang Mai. But Angrid is better, cheaper, and faster than all of them. Of course, it doesn't have the sit-down ambiance of Chiang Mai. If you are looking for something casual, this place is it. It is probably 20 yards from Noodle Nation, is similarly priced, better, and always less crowded.


Why not 5 stars? If you are dining in, it takes forever to get your bill. And they used to do student discount, then only did it at lunch, and now possibly do not do it at all. I hate that.


Intensely good food, reasonably priced, open late by Oxford standards.

Cheap and good evening eateries are hard to find in Oxford. The legions of chain restaurants are not expensive, but you're still going to part with a tenner or so unless you have a voucher. When I first heard about Angrid Thai - just opposite the George Street Odeon - I didn't expect that much, seeing as it's on the site of a former all-you-can-eat, opposite the food poisoning fried chicken stand and close to the sub-mediocre Noodle Bar (now Noodle Nation) which I frequented far too many times as I couldn't quite persuade my friends that it wasn't great. However, the Thai postgraduate in the group insisted that it was, and the place became a dinner staple for me in my last year at Uni.

The menu is fairly standard - lots of stir fries, pad thai and the like; however, the best items I had were the specials, such as the satay-esque grilled pork with sticky rice. I also thought the Tom Yum soups were pretty good too, more refreshing than spicy, but pleasant.

It's not Chiang Mai kitchen, but at £5-7 a dish, it's well worth a go. Oxford finally has cheap and good.

Cheap, veg-friendly Thai food? I'm game!

I got some pretty tasty green vegetable curry for £6.50. The amount of rice they give you is a bit excessive but if you have a hearty appetite, that may be a positive thing. The only thing that almost scared me away was the atmosphere: a bit too bright and chain-looking.

The service was pretty good too-- not particularly invasive and overly attentive and our food came out within ten minutes of ordering.

Angrid Thai is ok. I've been a few times. It's cheap and tasty enough. But, the experience always leaves me wanting more. I think the curries here could be more flavourful and thicker. The menu looks very extensive; but, it is mostly variations of the same thing. Has a "stir-fry feel" to the place rather than a Thai feel, know what I mean? The decor is fast food chic. I'm not a food snob; I like cheap fast food too. So, Angrid Thai has its place; but I think you will find more interesting dishes and better prepared classic Thai dishes at other places in Oxford.

This is a good place for a casual and affordable meal in Oxford. The food is generally decent but is not as delicate and sophisticated as the other higher end Thai restaurants in Oxford. The service is efficient but not particularly polite. This is the place to go for a quick and relaxed meal.

Stopped here for a quick meal and was pleasantly surprised. The Thai spicy noodles was really tasty as well as the green Thai curry. Prices were quite reasonable
